PUNE — Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday spearheaded a major expansion of India's urban transit landscape by inaugurating Pune Metro Line 3, widely known as the Pink Line, and laying the foundation stone for four additional Phase-II corridors. Participating via video conferencing, the Prime Minister highlighted the rapid scaling of municipal rail systems across the country, underscoring a period of aggressive infrastructure development.
This latest transit milestone fits into a broader national strategy aimed at alleviating congestion in rapidly expanding tier-1 and tier-2 cities. Over the past dozen years, the central government has prioritized high-capacity mass transit systems as a cornerstone of sustainable urban planning, radically transforming how millions of commuters navigate metropolitan economic hubs on a daily basis.
According to reports by The Hindu, the Prime Minister noted during the virtual ceremony that the nation's operational metro network has surged from a modest 248 kilometers to an expansive 1,200 kilometers over the past 12 years. Government officials underscored that this exponential growth reflects a deliberate policy shift toward modernizing public transport networks to meet the demands of a fast-growing economy.
